After arriving in Hong Kong, I tried to live with the workers, the poor, and hapless people following the ideals of the 60s such as the theology of liberation and the spirit of St. Francis. I wished to write songs to express their concerns. Songs became a way to document these lives that I encountered from boat-families to street-sleepers. [...]
Songs are ten times better than talking. Feedbacks and inter-actions invoked by songs are also participatory. They become the listener's rapport too. My songs are my spiritual meditations, and prayers of a kind. Between a writer and a song-writer, I have opted for the latter. An article is read an understood and there it lay dormant. Yet a song can enjoy is cyclic reincarnations through performance, by the original writer or anyone else, anytime anywhere, whoever see fits. People could be touched by a song in just a few minutes. Vividly it creates an emotional spirit, an immediacy, while an article might take more time.
Hopefully powerful enough, these songs carry the seeds of power to change the social. But it is also a reminder to change the self. And this change has to be continuous. We should never think that what we've archived is finished. There is no ending as such. When people calculate achievements, when they quest for results, it would be misled. It is but a genuine process.
